About Julieta B. Criollo Julieta was born in Maracaibo,
Venezuela. When she was 19 she moved to the USA with a scholarship to
study Electrical Engineering, and in 1980 she obtained her "Bachelor of
Science and Engineering" from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia;
and in 1983, she received her "Masters in Computer and Information Science",
also from University of Pennsylvania. As an engineer, Julieta worked as
a software developer from 1980 until 2001 in the USA, France, and Canada.
As a software developer, she designed, developed, and maintained different
types of software programs (from the firmware of specialized controllers,
to operating system of multi-user computers, networks, and various end-user
applications). In 2001, Julieta returned to school to learn about natural
ways to health, well-being, and living. She enrolled in an intensive three-year
program in Western Herbal Medicine at Dominion Herbal College in Burnaby,
BC, Canada, and in the fall of 2004 she received her "Clinical Herbal
Therapist" diploma. At the same time, Julieta also trained in Reflexology,
Reiki, Bach Flower Remedies, and Energy Healing . Julieta started her
healing practice by opening a home clinic in the fall of 2001. She began
by having an open-house session every Sunday afternoon offering free foot
massage, and by the end of 2001, she was also offering free treatments
on Reflexology and Reiki. The following spring she added Bach Flower Remedies,
and later that summer, Energy Healing. She ran the clinic as an open-house
clinic on Sunday afternoons for a year, then by appointment (either at
her home clinic or the patient's home). She also has donated her services
to the Nurses of Royal Columbia Hospital in New Westminster, and The Center
for Spiritual Life in Port Moody. Today, Julieta dedicates her life to
promote health and wellness. She is a member of the Canadian Herbal Association
of British Colombia (CHAofBC ) and the Health Action Network Society (HANS)

Did you know:[did-you-know.swf] Events [events.swf] What's herbal medicine?
[whats Herbal Medicine.swf] Herbal medicine is the use plant medicine
to promote health. Herbal medicine uses a holistic approach to health.
This means that it addresses the physical, mental, and spiritual needs
of a person as a whole. The following are some Natural Medicine approaches
that use herbal medicine: Western herbal Medicine [whats WHM.swf] Western
Herbal Medicine is a holistic system that combines conventional medicine,
herbal remedies, nutrition, and lifestyle, to restore and stimulate the
body's natural ability to heal itself. The treatments take into account
the individual's physical, physiological, and emotional needs. The use
of herbs is based on empirical and scientific knowledge of the medicinal
properties of plants and their effects on different body systems. In Western
Herbal medicine, a herbalist may be known as: Clinical herbalist or [whats-WHM
CHT.swf] Clinical herbal therapist This is a herbalist who studied for
three to four years in a Western Herbal Medicine program (with a clinical
practicum of 500 hours). Clinical registered herbal practitioner [whats-WHM
CRHP.swf] This is a Clinical Herbalist or Clinical Herbal Therapist who
is also a member of the Canadian Herbalist Association of British Columbia.
Medical herbalist [whats-WHM MedH.swf] This term is used in the United
Kingdom to designate a Clinical Herbalist or Clinical Herbal Therapist.
Master herbalist [whats-WHM MasterH.swf] This is a herbalist who completed
a one-year research program with thesis on some aspect of Herbal Medicine.
Chartered herbalist [whats-WHM CharterH.swf] This is a herbalist who completed
a one-year non-clinical program focusing on the study of medicinal properties
of herbs. Charter herbalists may work in their own shops or offices, health
food stores, for other herbalists, or may manufacture herbal products.
Traditional Chinese medicine [whats TCM.swf] Traditional Chinese Medicine
(TCM) is a holistic system based on the theory that health and longevity
is the result of living in harmony. Disease is just the result of some
type of disharmony. TCM uses two basic systems to determine the type of
disharmony befalling a patient and appropriate treatment thereof: the
Yin/Yang duality, and the Five-Element theory (wood, fire, earth, metal,
and water). In TCM, everything in nature is associated to one of the five
elements (health problems, organs, part of the body, emotions, plants,
herbal remedies, seasons, etc.) and treatment may so be designed accordingly.
A TCM practitioner is trained to seek patterns of disharmony or imbalances
using both systems and will try to restore balance according to these
systems. Homeopathy [whats homeopathy.swf] Homeopathy is a holistic healing
based on the theory that "likes cure likes". This means that a substance
causing a set of symptoms in a healthy person can be used to treat a condition
with similar symptoms. Homeopathic remedies are made from a variety of
substances, including herbal products. Homeopathic remedies are highly
diluted and therefore safe to use. Although many of the homeopathic remedies
are made from herbal medicines, a homeopathic doctor is not referred to
as a herbalist. Ayurvedic Medicine [whats ayurvedic.swf] Ayurveda is not
just a healing modality, it is a holistic system for balanced and harmonious
day-to-day living, encouraging physical, mental, emotional and spiritual
well-being. Ayurveda is based on the interaction of the body, mind, and
spirit; and energy is manifested in five elements -- Ether, Air, Fire,
Water, and Earth. Together, the five elements form the basis for all matter,
and combine to form three basic forces (or vital energy) called the three
Doshas -- "Vata, Pitta, Kapha". The Doshas exist in everything in the
universe and influence all mental and physical activity. Each individual
has a unique combination of the three Doshas called "prakriti". Disease
is the manifestation of Doshas imbalance. Treatment is based on identifying
the Doshic constitution of the individual and any imbalance present, and
consists in the use of natural medicines (herbs, minerals, vegetables)
as well as nutrition and lifestyle adjustments. Naturopathic medicine
[whats naturopath.swf] This is a system of holistic healing that encompasses
the use of several natural therapies, such as homeopathy, herbal medicine,
nutrition, massage therapy, and others. The difference between a naturopathic
doctor and a specialized therapist (such as a clinical herbalist, chiropractor,
massage therapist, homeopathic doctor, etc.) is the depth of the training
in the specific area, the specialized therapist receiving a more in depth
training in their field. What's a herbalist? [whats a herbalist.swf] "Herbalist"
is a general term that is often used to refer to a health practitioner
that uses herbal medicines to promote health and well-being; that is,
someone that makes herbal medicine remedies, someone involved in the study
of medicinal properties of the plants. However, not all health practitioners
that use herbal remedies are called herbalists (for example, aromatherapists,
naturopathic doctors, homeopathic doctors). Some of the health practitioners
that are referred to as herbalists are those trained in Western Herbal
Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. What's
clinical herbal therapy? [whats CHT-or-CH.swf] This is a holistic Western
Herbal Medicine approach that combines conventional medicine, herbal remedies,
nutrition, lifestyle, and physical examinations to evaluate and address
the patient's physical, physiological, and emotional needs. The treatment/recommendations
for a patient is based on a detail information of patient's medical, social,
and family history, lifestyle and nutritional habits, appropiate physical
exams, and available medical diagnostic exams. In addition, the therapy
may also include recommendation to adjunct therapies such as massage therapy,
physiotherapy, chiropractic treatment, or a visit to a medical doctor
for medical evaluation and/or diagnostic exams. What's the latest in natural
